Indigo Partners, a US-based private equity firm with a stake in several low-cost airlines, has signed an agreement to purchase 96,000 aircraft seats from Recaro Aircraft Seating.
Indigo’s airline portfolio includes Chile-based JetSmart, Mexico-based Volaris, US-based Frontier, Canada-based Enerjet and Hungarian carrier Wizz Air.
The seats, the state-of-the-art SL3710 economy class cabin model, will be installed in Airbus A320 series and Boeing 737 aircraft across the various carriers from 2021.
The order is the largest in the history of Recaro.
“This achievement is an important milestone for Recaro and the teams involved, all of which deserve great recognition and gratitude,” Mark Hiller, Recaro Aircraft Seating CEO and shareholder, said.
“This is potentially the fastest increase of an order that we have experienced, and I am confident that our teams are well prepared to handle this,” Hiller added.
Recaro worked closely with Chile’s JetSmart to develop a sustainable seat for the airline, as the company already has numerous sustainable initiatives. JetSmart has reduced its carbon footprint by using efficient Airbus aircraft, prioritizing lightweight products for its cabins in the Airbus A320 fleet.
The newest and lightest member of Recaro’s economy class seating range, the SL3710 economy class seat weighs approximately eight kilograms. Its efficient design is comprised of durable and reliable parts, making it a cost-effective option for airlines interested in minimizing fuel and maintenance costs.
“A lot of work went into selecting a seating supplier for this order […] the efficiency in terms of weight and design of their seats are in line with the essence that we seek to implement in our ultra-low-cost model, adjusting to our sustainability policies that seek to reduce the costs of our operations, generating in turn a decrease in our carbon footprint,” Estuardo Ortiz, CEO of JetSmart, said.
JetSmart was advised on the transaction by Chilean law firm Prat & Cia.
